Making a Difference Together – Become a Positive Bystander

Together, we can all play a part in making a difference

Sexual violence continues to be a significant issue throughout the U.K. While anyone can be affected, a public health response must acknowledge the gendered aspect of these crimes—namely, that women constitute the majority of victims and men are often the perpetrators.  With sexual offenses increasing and more victims or survivors stepping forward, we must also examine the societal culture that normalises sexist and misogynistic language, which may contribute to such behaviour.

Providing individuals with a framework to support victims who come forward with disclosures offers critical assistance and helps guide them to additional resources. In essence, research shows if people are provided the knowledge and tools they will most likely intervene safely when they encounter problematic situations.

The aims of our Communities in Motion e-learning approach is to raise awareness of sexual violence and its impacts and expanding its reach. This violence prevention approach targets not only girls and women but also boys and men, not as perpetrators or potential offenders, but as empowered bystanders who can challenge abusive behaviour and support those who have been abused.

To date, over 1,000 individuals have completed the Community In Motion Training. Additionally, several participants have undergone ‘Train The Trainer’ programs, enabling us to expand the training to more partners across the region.

Everyone is a bystander, and everyone has the responsibility to act.
